Conference news – January 2010
29th January 2010Welcome to 2010.
We speak for all South Africans when we say that 2010 simply must be a great year! With the global financial crisis of 2008/9 having hit us all between the eyes, we can only look forward to an improvement. In South Africa we are particularly excited to be hosting the World Cup, the biggest sporting event on the annual calendar. Finally we will be able to showcase our beautiful country to millions of visitors and millions more television viewers. Perhaps those people who still believe that we live in deepest darkest Africa with lions and elephants roaming the streets will be stunned into silence when they see the infrastructure that exists. Our only hope is that we can limit the impact of crime and make it an event that will go down in history as one the “greats”.
We welcome Sarah Dabner as our new Marketing lady.
Sarah has joined us to make sure that we keep up the good relationships we have built up with you, our loyal customers in the past, and will be forging new relationships with those companies that have not yet enjoyed our hospitality.
To find out more about how our conference department can organise your next banquet, conference or event phone us on 021 448 6117 or view the conference venues webpage.
Conference News – December 2009
9th December 2009Woolworths takes Social Responsibility into account when hosting Year End Function
We were honoured to host the Woolworths IT division – what a fantastic idea to combine a year end function with a social responsibility project. Kids from the Al-Noor orphanage in Woodstock were treated to a day of fun by some of Woolworths’ enthusiastic staff. First they played games on the lawns in front of the main buildings and then enjoyed making noise with a kids drumming session. Of course there was plenty of food to go around and a great time was had by all the kids. Then it was time for the adults to have their fun and a great party went on upstairs in our Congo Room till late.
Old Mutual goes “Proudly South African” at their Year End Function
As can be seen in the picture staff from Old Mutual’s Group Internal Audit division declared their loyalty and support for our beautiful country by choosing the “Proudly South African” theme for their function. It is really great to see South Africans shrugging off all the bad news and declaring their patriotism in such a positive way.

Charity – Men on the side of the road
We have recently been introduced to a great concept that enables us to reduce unemployment without the risk of picking labourers up from the side of the road. Let’s face it, in our crime-ridden society we are all fearful of picking up strangers and employing them in our homes or businesses. Men on the Side Of the Road will be able to assist you with your labour requirements by simply making a phone call. They have a list of prospects that are categorised by skill in various areas of the peninsula. Whether you need a plumber, bricklayer, painter or gardener they know someone that can do the job! They will also advise you on the recommended daily rate for a particular job, and as a non-profit organisation it does not cost you anything extra.
If you would like to make use of their services, or you want to support this initiative to reduce crime and unemployment, call now on 021 448 9000. For more information on Men at Work click here.

The River Club Reporter – June 2009
30th June 2009The alterations to our reception area are now complete, and so far all the comments have been extremely positive. If you have not visited since we started, we invite you to pop in for coffee at any time. A heartfelt thanks to all our customers who continued to support us through all the banging, breaking down, rebuilding, dust and general mess!
Now that the big mess is over, we are slowly but surely going to be touching up each room, so there will be much less noise and dust. We hope that by the end of the year you will be very impressed with the new look. As part of our Extreme Makeover we have also been quite bold in painting the outside of the building in a beautiful cream colour.
Seen recently at the River Club
We regarded ourselves honoured to be part of this years annual Cadiz Freedom swim, where many (and some might say crazy) swimmers braved the icy Atlantic to swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand. Whether you regard them as a touch mad or not, it was all in the name of charity with the Vista Nova school being the sole beneficiary.

The Caltex Road show was a high energy event with actors training the forecourt staff in customer service and introducing them to the new Caltex Techron for Diesel. What was most impressive was the degree to which the actors were able to pull their audience in and get them to participate. By all accounts the event was a major success and has been repeated throughout South Africa with similar enthusiasm and support.
Soon to be seen
Here at the River Club you can learn all about being a wine connoisseur by attending one of the well known Cape Wine Academy courses. What better way to impress your friends at the dinner table than with your superior knowledge of the latest cultivars?
The vast majority of people hooked on nicotine wish they could give it up for good. Regular Smokenders courses, run at the River Club, may be just the way for you to finally kick the habit. This course is endorsed by Discovery Health, so if you are a member of Discovery Vitality you should qualify for a discount.
Dr Brian Jude is a dynamic presenter and recently presented his courses at the River Club. His infectious personality makes every course interesting and highly motivating. Dr Jude will be back later in the year to present his courses on “Customer Service, Managers mistakes and more” – watch this space!
As always we would like to thank all our River Club Regulars for their ongoing support.
Our Team
We would like to congratulate Mtheto on his 21st birthday. Mthetho has been with the River Club for just more than a year now and can be seen dutifully cleaning, stacking and assisting wherever he can, to make sure that our customers have a great experience in the conference venue.
