Congratulations to Lucas Clover for winning the U.S Open this past week.

His world ranking moved up from (71) last week to 18. The big surprise was the form of David Duval who has been in the wilderness for such a long time. With the U.S Open result the former world number one has moved from (882) last week to 142 in the world

Rule of the Month

Question: A fellow Competitor’s drive may have landed in a water hazard as it cannot be located. Your competitor asks to drop his ball behind the hazard and incurs a one-stroke penalty. Should you allow this?

Answer: The rules don’t allow it and neither should you.

Rule 26-1 states that in the absence of knowing or being virtually certain that the ball entered a hazard; it must be treated as a lost ball.

Golfing Tip of the Month

Starting the Down Swing

The down swing happens in less than a second, is the culmination of the golf swing and the result of proper alignment, stance, grip and back swing. It requires a fluid movement of your body in a powerful and unified sequence of events. The three major phases of the downswing are:

  1. Shift
  2. Rotate
  3. Hit

In the beginning of the down swing, the arms and hands are passive, essentially in free fall from the top – The movement of the knees toward the target and the turning of the left hip and side back to the target initiates the downswing. This in turn sets up a chain reaction, whereby the power created by the resistance of the hips and shoulders is transferred into the back of the ball. At the top of your back swing, your upper body has completed its wind up and ideally the lower body has initiated the downswing.

Common Mistake: Do not start the downswing with your upper body, by first lunging at the ball with your head. Rather, you should feel the weight transfer from the ground up. Beginner golfers tend to swing hard with their arms and upper body, which in turn creates many problems. Swinging too hard will throw off your balance and weight-shift, which will actually reduce the power of your swing. A squarely hit ball will travel much further than a forcefully hit one.

The River Club Reporter – June 2009

The alterations to our reception area are now complete, and so far all the comments have been extremely positive. If you have not visited since we started, we invite you to pop in for coffee at any time. A heartfelt thanks to all our customers who continued to support us through all the banging, breaking down, rebuilding, dust and general mess!

Now that the big mess is over, we are slowly but surely going to be touching up each room, so there will be much less noise and dust. We hope that by the end of the year you will be very impressed with the new look. As part of our Extreme Makeover we have also been quite bold in painting the outside of the building in a beautiful cream colour.

Seen recently at the River Club

We regarded ourselves honoured to be part of this years annual Cadiz Freedom swim, where many (and some might say crazy) swimmers braved the icy Atlantic to swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand. Whether you regard them as a touch mad or not, it was all in the name of charity with the Vista Nova school being the sole beneficiary.

The Caltex Road Show

The Caltex Road show was a high energy event with actors training the forecourt staff in customer service and introducing them to the new Caltex Techron for Diesel. What was most impressive was the degree to which the actors were able to pull their audience in and get them to participate. By all accounts the event was a major success and has been repeated throughout South Africa with similar enthusiasm and support.

Soon to be seen

Here at the River Club you can learn all about being a wine connoisseur by attending one of the well known Cape Wine Academy courses. What better way to impress your friends at the dinner table than with your superior knowledge of the latest cultivars?

The vast majority of people hooked on nicotine wish they could give it up for good. Regular Smokenders courses, run at the River Club, may be just the way for you to finally kick the habit. This course is endorsed by Discovery Health, so if you are a member of Discovery Vitality you should qualify for a discount.

Dr Brian Jude is a dynamic presenter and recently presented his courses at the River Club. His infectious personality makes every course interesting and highly motivating. Dr Jude will be back later in the year to present his courses on “Customer Service, Managers mistakes and more” – watch this space!

As always we would like to thank all our River Club Regulars for their ongoing support.

Our Team

We would like to congratulate Mtheto on his 21st birthday. Mthetho has been with the River Club for just more than a year now and can be seen dutifully cleaning, stacking and assisting wherever he can, to make sure that our customers have a great experience in the conference venue.

Footnote

Believe it or not we are already taking enquiries for end of year functions! It only feels like yesterday that we were celebrating the New Year and here we are halfway through the year already. Do not forget to book your function as soon as you can and allow us to make it a special and memorable event.
